Method of Teaching

His direct study with BKS Iyengar helped to hone the depth and breadth of his sadhana. You will find him very thorough, thoughtful and insightful in his devotional practice.

This translates seamlessly into his teachings.  David’s efforts to guide students to experience the integration of the multi-dimensional aspects of the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar is found in his distinctively clear teaching style, skillful use of props, and masterful sequences. By teaching simple actions in a progressive and highly methodical manner, David prepares, the body, breath and mind.  This helps to create the condition for one to become more receptive and can begin to catch glimpses of the Rahasya of Yoga.

David aims to do this by demonstrating the technical aspects of yoga with precise geometry and making visible the actions involved. This sets the stage to help students understand each asana more deeply.   Then to bring the students into the subtler stages of Yoga - beyond asana - he undertakes the asanas along with the students to illuminate the firmness of body, steadiness of intelligence.  In turn, he exemplifies the effortless effort that can be reached through dedication and discernment in one’s practice.

By fostering a presence of mind, one can better follow the instructions, refine the mechanical actions, and become more receptive to the subtle effects of the actions.  Then the cultivation of awareness towards one’s inner being is near.

David’s devotion and dedication to Guruji is paramount. He has been given so much. It is his humble duty to transmit the essence of B.K.S. Iyengar’s teachings. He endeavors to share wholeheartedly what he has learned from Guruji.
